Lost in translation

I have tons of stories I can ad to the blog about Spencer.  Since we all know how versatile and talented he is, it would be kind of boring to tell those kind of stories.  Instead, I am going to post a somewhat embarrassing story, yet very funny, that involve, once more, my poor parents, my mom in particular.  Yes, it's one of those stories that all couples have with their in-laws soon or later, but that in this case, to make the matter worse -- or more hilarious!, the real meaning of it all was "lost in translation..."  For a while, at least :).  Spencer had to communicate in Spanish with my parents since they don't speak English, and it was just at the beginning of our trip to Spain...  Remember, Spencer had just met them, so they were all trying to figure out each other...

I had gone to interview some families for our program leaving my mom, dad, and Spencer in the kitchen of the house we had rented -- talking... or at least trying to communicate.  My mom, who is an excellent cook, wanted to make a few favorites of our family for Spencer.  One of them involved boiling eggs.  Here is what you need to know:  the word eggs is "huevos" in Spanish, which is also the slang word for balls (the male part).

So as she is about to boil about 8 eggs, and she is trying to explain to him what she is trying to make with them, Spencer (according to my mom) interrupts her and says (I am translating into English), "you can have my two 'eggs' to boil them to with the others, please."

My mom looks at my dad with a confused/how does he dare kind face, and my dad makes an attempt to justify Spencer by saying: "He probably doesn't know what he is saying.  I don't think he would be that rude. He seems very clueless."  But my mom, just in case, stayed away from him until I came back home.

As she was telling me, I was laughing so hard that I could not explain to any of them what was being said or what was meant to be said, but 5 minutes later, my entire family (all over Spain and France) knew about that, and poor Spencer is still getting jokes about it, especially from my brother, who keeps telling him him, "Dude, if you made it into the family, anyone can.  That's awesome!  Way to set the bar low."

Needless to say, they all love him!  I am not sure if the love started regardless or because of that...

We ended eating the "huevos"

My dad and Spencer got to be quite "close"
