I met Spence during a summer program for science teachers at the Sea Education Association (SEA) in Wood's Hole, MA. We spent lots of time together in the classroom, in our on-campus housing, in the lab, and on our watch at sea. Spence made each part of the experience more fun, and I'm happy we've stayed in touch over the years.
We began with program with a few weeks in the classroom and in the field on land in the Woods Hole area. Spence was able to employ an amazing level of focus during a number of riveting classroom activities using household items.

Once at sea we were all a part of a rotating crew where we helped (or at least tried to help) sail the ship and collect and analyze data for a number of research projects.

| We spent one long day on board analyzing water samples (nitrate and phosphate levels?). |

| In between all of the hard work and data collection, we also had a great time. |
